We saw the return of the scrunchie a couple seasons ago, but we’re now seeing a resurgence of Alice bands, embellished clips and scarf scunchies.
Fashion welcomed back – with great reluctance by some – the infamous hair scrunchie a couple of seasons ago. And now we’re seeing the resurgence of all sorts of hair accessories, from embellished hair clips and scarf scrunchies to Alice bands.

WHY WE WANT THEM
Hair accessories like clips and Alice bands have a real nostalgic feel to them, which is perhaps why everyone is freaking out that they’re back in vogue. With the fashion world showing the '80s scrunchie all kinds of love a few seasons ago, it's no surprise the rest of the hair accessory world is now following suit. In their SS19 shows, Ashley Williams favoured bows and embellished slogan barrettes clipped all over models' heads while Tom Ford opted for sleek headscarves. Fast-forward to the SS20 Simone Rocha show and models were walking the runway sporting dramatic embellished headbands.
HOW TO WEAR THEM
This isn't a trend reserved solely for the runway. Everyone from stylists and fashion editors to influencers and celebrities are embracing the look – one glance at your Instagram feed is all the inspiration you need for how to wear the trend! But to get you started, we've summarised our favourite ways to wear our best hair accessories this season.
1. Hair scrunchie
Decorate your high ponytail with a retro scrunchy. Pull your hair up into a high pony and use a patterned scrunchie to decorate the look. Pair with high-waisted shorts and a crop top for a retro-modern look.
2. Clips or barrettes
A cute way to don the slogan barrette is to keep your hair loose and simply pin one side down with the clip stationed just above or at your temple. It’s fun to mix and match barrettes and slides and group them together for emphasis, otherwise called stacking. Pull your hair into a side or middle parting and slide on a few clips with different patterns, shapes and embellishments at your temple.
3. Alice band
Channel your inner Chanel girl or your best Blair Waldorf and accessorise your look with an Alice band or headband – remember, the thicker the padding the chicer the look. We love an Alice band with a casual outfit like blue jeans and a tee with sneakers, or a more serious ensemble like all-black or a suit for that perfect juxtaposition.
4. Scarf scrunchie
If a scrunchie is a bit too retro for you then go for a more sophisticated take on the trend with a scarf scrunchie. Create a bun at the nape of your neck and add your scarf scrunchie. This look works especially well for special occasions or for when you might have forgotten to wash your hair!
