How to style summer's 7 hottest trends for guys

- - No comments

From all-white denim to key ’90s pieces and tonal dressing, these are spring’s trends for men.

We try out seven of the hottest spring trends for men. From real ’90s classics like bucket hats and cargo pants to all-white denim and bursts of floral, here's how to style these looks for the season ahead.
Written by Jocelyn Stiebel

1. The cargo pant

The AW19 menswear runways were filled with baggy, billowing pants, and we're here for this major '90s comeback. From Marni to Off-White and Jacquemus, the proof is in the pudding that cargo pants are in. If embracing the full-on baggy look is a little daunting, then opt for a version that’s elasticated at the bottom. This will streamline the silhouette and help to take away the bulk at the bottom. Ditch the T-shirt and team your cargos with a button-up shirt and a sporty pair of sneakers.

Do: get yourself a fun printed bucket hat which will add another '90s-inspired element to the look.

2. All-white or cream

Tonal white dominated the SS19 menswear runways and is by far one of the most sophisticated and wearable trends to come around in a while. Take your cue from Junya Watanabe with a look that's opulent while looking crisp and fresh at the same time. The utility pockets scream not just '90s but also major practicality. Roll up the hems of your pants to show off your socks.

Do: mix cream and white. They are a stylish combination and a certified spring/summer look!

3. Floral shorts

Flowers make everyone happy, including guys. So don’t be afraid to get festive this spring with a pair of floral shorts. Bring this trend into 2019 by pairing it with a dark button-up top (instead of a Polo with a popped collar circa 2002). A button-up will take focus away from the casualness of the shorts, and add a little formality to the overall look.

Do: add cool accessories like a moonbag and socks with slides (also a major trend) to make your outfit unique.

4. Pink

If the latest Spring collection by Christian Dior is anything to go by, then pink for men is totally in! We love artistic director and designer, Kim Jones's tonal take on pink using various shades and textures – the modern way for men to wear the colour. If you want to add a little edge to break up the soft tones of pink, look to black accessories like a cool pair of trainers.

Do: wear a pair of socks pulled all the way up; they will be the difference between a sporty look and a preppy look.

JX basic T-shirt 109.95; JX board shorts 259.95; Falke socks 130; Nike Defline sneakers 1099.95; accessories stylist’s own

5. Clashing prints

Look to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air for major print-clashing inspo! While we loved his interpretation of the trend back in the '90s, the 2019 take requires a lot more sophistication. It’s less about the actual prints and more about the fit – baggy clothes just won’t cut it. We love a stripe as a base – stripes work with pretty much all other prints and make it easy to start the clashing fun.

Do: use a staple like a denim jacket to incorporate a little solidity into the outfit.

JX denim jacket 799.95; JX Versace-inspired printed T-shirt 199.95; JX striped shorts 299.95; Vans socks (set of 3) 299.95; JX sneakers 399.95

6. The printed shirt

Forget the notion that loud menswear is obnoxious and attention seeking. That kind of thinking is outdated and boring – again, just ask The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. We’re embracing the printed shirt trend because it’s fun and warm-weather inspired – this season favours the bold! The great thing about a printed shirt is that is can be casual or smart. For a smart-casual look, like this, all you need is a pair of dark trousers or pants and you’re good to go. Add a fun pair of socks that represent your personality.

Do: wear a pair of brogues (keeping the printed socks) for a more formal look.

JX printed casual shirt 349.95; D66 chinos 399.95; Puma beanie 249.95; Ray-Ban sunglasses 2190; Reebok sneakers 899.95; accessories and socks stylist’s own

7. Dungarees

Another ’90s favourite! Dungarees, overalls, boiler suits… Whatever you choose to call them, they were everywhere back then. TLC, Will Smith and The Fugees were frequently spotted sporting the all-in-one; even the late, great Tupac embraced this unlikely trend. Vogue says that overalls have a history of being the chosen clothes for working men in the 18th century; since then it has remained a functional garment hence its utilitarian design features. And if you want real proof that this trend is back to offer us even more, then look no further than the Supreme and The North Face collaboration last year.

Do: pair yours with a simple T-shirt underneath, as the dungaree is a bold garment already. And a baseball cap will finish off the outdoorsy look nicely.
Don’t: go for a trucker cap or snapback, as this will resonate cliched '90s instead of the stylish '90s-inspired trends we’re seeing today.

JX basic T-shirt 109.95; JX denim dungarees 799.95; JX sunglasses 149.99; watch 249.99; Falke socks 130; Nike ‘Airmax’ sneakers 1399.95; cap stylist’s own

THE VERSATILE GOLF SHIRT IS IN FULL SWING

- - No comments
Golf shirts are back, and they're cooler than ever before. We break down how to bring out the best in this versatile piece.
Golf shirts have climbed the wardrobe ranks and can be styled in a variety of ways to take your look from casual to formal in an instant. Nkgabiseng Motau sums up the many ways you can work your golfer.

The varsity cool golfer

As rapper T.I. once said, nothing beats the ‘the swagger of a college kid’. Create a stylish campus-cool combo by adding a 'members only' jacket over your golfer. Go with soft summer colours broken by a neutral, like grey. If you opt to wear a cap then try stick with your chosen colour palette – a grey cap paired with grey pants creates a cohesive look.

The smart/casual golfer

When wearing multiple stripes, the trick is to keep the colours in the same family. It’s the darker shades that bring the ensemble together here, creating a pulled-together look with a smart/casual feel. Don't be afraid to add some accessories – this outfit provides the perfect neutral canvas for interesting pieces that bring out your personality. The puffer gilet is a great way to add a warm layer without creating a stuffy silhouette.

The combination golfer

Golfers are versatile, which means you can play around and be inventive with your combos. How about adding a silk-textured blazer over a pastel-coloured sweater? We love the contrast of colours. For something different, try turned-up plaid pants and an interesting pair of socks. Complete the look with a few sporty touches, like a moonbag worn the trendiest way (across the chest) and some classic tennis kicks for added flair.

The rebellious golfer

Who would have thought a classic golf tee could rev up some engines? Create a badass biker vibe by wearing your golfer like a rockstar. Pair interesting textures and patterns – like leather and plaid – for a look you can own at any party. Kick your street cred up a notch with Dr. Martens high-top boots in black or burgundy. Complete the look with an interesting pair of socks, folding up your jeans to show them off.

The preppy golfer

Give your golfer the classic appeal of the old boys' club. For this look, throw a sporty knit over a casual shirt in pastel blue or light denim. The key with these layers is to get the right mix of colours. Opt for blue, white and navy with pops of red. Stick to a neutral colour for your chinos, which can be folded at the bottom for an extra relaxed look. Wear with sneakers for a casual-cool feel, or boat shoes when you're in the mood to dial the look up a little.

The suave golfer

Slick as the night, dark colours bring out the cool in everyone. For a dapper and minimalist look, pair your golfer with a dark tailored suit. Keep the look simple and accessory-free, except for a bold pair of dark sunnies for some attitude. Finish off with a pair of sleek sock sneakers in black for a dash of street-style sensibility. Pay attention to the fit of the suit jacket and pants, opting for a slim silhouette.

Winter clothes every guy needs

Nail the street-style trend this winter with menswear that’s good looking and easy to wear.
We’ve nailed down the ultimate men’s wardrobe to help you brace the chilly season without losing your cool. With just a few well-chosen items, you can transform your look to suit every occasion this winter.

THE BOMBER JACKET

The bomber jacket brings the sports luxe element to street style. The identifying characteristics of a classic bomber are the ribbed cuffs, front zipped closures and defined neckline (although some styles have a hoodie). Wear your bomber over a sweatshirt with joggers or denims, and you’re good to go.

THE BIKER JACKET

A biker jacket conveys just the right amount of attitude. It always makes a strong impression and can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion. The most iconic pairing for a classic, casual look would be a white T-shirt and denim jeans. Alternatively, amp up your style and add personality to a formal look by wearing it with a suit.

THE BUTTON-UP CARDI

The cardigan is this winter’s layering essential. From preppy to sporty, there are a variety of different styles available to suit your mood and wardrobe. If you’re worried a cardi will make you look like your granddad, fear not – modern cardigans are a suave addition to your wardrobe that will keep you warm while still looking refined.

THE DENIM JACKET

A classic denim jacket is the ideal get-up-and-go winter warmer. Always on trend, this season’s denim jacket incorporates elements of fleece to keep the cold out and the style in. Wear with chinos for a smarter look, or do double denim for a casual look that’s right on-trend.

THE JUMPER

Whether you want to layer your outfit or just add some style, you can’t go wrong with a crew-neck jumper. Consider it the T-shirt of the winter wardrobe. It’s a good idea to have a few of these in your wardrobe to throw on when you need an extra layer in a flash. Keep things simple and style a button-down shirt underneath for a smart-casual vibe.

THE SLOGAN TOP

Slogan tops have more to offer than just self-expression – they’re also visually appealing and super easy to wear. The slogan should be the statement piece of your look, so keep bold layering to a minimum and let the trend speak for itself.

THE JOGGER

Joggers are giving jeans and chinos a run for their money. With the athleisure trend continuously on the rise, joggers are now considered the must-have item in every wardrobe; and there are many ways to work the trend. Wear with a blazer and dress shoes to smarten your casual vibe, or pair with a T-shirt for effortless cool.

THE BLAZER

If you think of a blazer as formal and stuffy, it’s time to rethink it. Worn with denims, a modern blazer adds a polished but trendy touch to your outfit. Wear a bold colour or patterned shirt underneath your blazer to give it some street cred.

THE BEANIE

Beanies have become sought after wardrobe staples just as much for their laid-back appeal as their ability to keep out the biting cold. They come in many different shapes, sizes and fabrications, and look just as good with streetwear as with sleek wear. We recommend going for a neutral colour such as navy, black or grey to get the most wear out of your beanie. Pair with a layered look, or with the denim-on-denim trend to give your outfit an edge.

How to rock the denim-on-denim trend without looking like a cowboy

- - No comments
Double down on denim for a look that’s as cool as it is comfortable.
When it comes to versatility, comfort and laid-back cool, denim can’t be beaten. Considering its universal appeal, it’s not surprising that wearing denim with more denim is a trend that’s come back into fashion. It can be tricky to pull off though, so take our advice to look hot without trying too hard.

Go for contrast

Keep the look casual and cool with denims that are visibly different, like blues with shades of grey or black. Once you’ve mastered the basic look try breaking it up with printed T-shirts and other interesting pieces.

Stay consistent

Another option is to wear similar pieces together: dark with dark, faded with faded and washed with washed. Avoid looking matchy-matchy and add a solid colour, whether it's neutral like white or a vibrant colour, it will make your whole look more sleek.

Live on the edge

If you tend to play it safe with your style we dare you to step out of your comfort zone and take a fashion risk. Distressing, patchwork or slogans on your denim add interest to your look and show you’re not afraid to try something different.
