The make-up rules we'll be breaking this season

We feel like breaking all the rules! Beauty editor Leila Petersen tells us which make-up rules are worth bending.

When it comes to your make-up it’s time to forget old-school commandments and rewrite the rulebook. From sporting both a power lip and eye combo simultaneously (gasp!) to wearing more than two hues on your face (say what?), transform these usual no-nos into resounding yeses!

SAY YES TO A RACOON EYE

Conventional make-up wisdom dictates that when it comes to eye make-up, precision is key. But thanks to the recent comeback of the '90s in both fashion and beauty, we’re kicking this rule to the curb. Messy, thick and bold, smudging your eyeshadow all around your eyes instantly adds a smouldering effect to the overall look. When it comes to execution, blending is key; so after rimming your lids all around including the waterline, use a blending eye shadow brush and move the eye shadow all around the eye to blur it out.

SAY YES TO A BOLD EYE AND LIP

While we will never give the boot to classic beauty looks like the solo vibrant red lip or a statement flick of a cat eye, we also believe in mixing the two together. Whoever said a loud pout and dramatic eye can’t be combined is a bore. However, make sure you keep your complexion fresh and bright.

SAY YES TO THREE COLOURS ON YOUR FACE

On paper, clashing neon green, blue and orange together might sound like a disaster waiting to happen but when worn as make-up – and correctly – it’s actually particularly striking, especially on deep skin tones. To keep things cohesive, stick to to simple graphic lines and matte finishes, and a clean complexion.

SAY YES TO ASYMMETRICAL GRAPHIC LINER

For those who can't get their graphic liner looking perfect, rejoice, as this one is for you! Super modern and totally wearable, all that this look really entails is choosing two different liner shapes and then applying it to each eye. Black liner is the obvious choice but we opted for a soft metallic purple shade, as it's less harsh and when paired with a fresh face and a glossy lip, makes for a very cool daytime look.

SAY YES TO BLUSH ON YOUR CHEEKS AND EYES

Rihanna’s 2017 Met Gala look made all of us realise that blusher doesn’t just belong on cheeks. Use a shade that complements your skin tone on both your eyes and your cheeks for a monochrome effect that is soft and beautiful.

SAY YES TO GLITTER ANYWHERE, ANYTIME

Far from making you look like a disco ball, sprinkling some glitter on your eyes or lips (or both) instantly adds a touch of playfulness to your make-up look. Apply your glitter with a slightly damp make-up brush, and layer until you reach the desired level of sparkle. As for how to wear your sparkle… take your cue from the runways by leaving the rest of your face clean and understated.
