HOW TO MAKE SURE YOUR FACIAL HAIR IS TRENDY NOT TRASHY

- - No comments
Men, it’s time to get your facial hair back into shape. From moustaches (watch out Movember) to boxed beards, here are the stylish ways you can show off your ability to sprout hairs from your face!
While facial hair of all styles might be back in fashion, it needs to be neat, intentional and stylish to remain trendy. The last thing you want is for your hair to send the wrong message. To keep it looking cool and groomed – not scruffy and amateur – here's what to do.

THE ORIGINAL 'STACHE

There’s a good reason why the classic, original moustache is an iconic look. It’s simple, clean and not to mention seriously stylish (just ask Tom Selleck). But that’s not even the best part; there are so many variations of this style that there's a ‘mo’ for just about everyone.

HOW TO INTRO THE MOUSTACHE

• Whether you wish to rock the chevron (ala Tom Selleck) or street style favourite the handlebar, the most effective way to grow a moustache is to avoid shaving for a while.
• Once your beard has thickened adequately, either juxtapose it with a clean-shaven face or frame it within an existing beard.
• Use a moustache comb to straighten it out now and then and apply wax to keep it in shape and give it a healthy shine.

DESIGNER STUBBLE

A short and neatly trimmed style, designer stubble is set to be the number-one facial hair trend this season. Fairly easy to maintain, this look is favoured by discerning men including Tom Ford and Jason Statham. Designer stubble is especially good at contouring and creating chiselled definition to your face and jawline.

How To Get designer stubble

• When your beard has grown out to about two to three millimetres in length, use an adjustable beard trimmer with pre-set shaving depths.
• Once you’re happy with the overall trim, wash your face to remove the cut hair and dry off with a towel.
• Next, clean up the hard-to-reach end tips of your moustache with a pair of grooming scissors.
• To keep your skin nourished and prevent ingrown hairs, exfoliate and nourish your skin with a mild exfoliator and high quality beard oil.

The 5-DAY BEARD

A little longer than designer stubble, the five-day beard, when done right, looks dashing and rugged – but nailing this look is tricky. Five days is merely a guideline; for some it may be 10. However long it might take for your hairs to pop through, this style of beard needs to look intentional rather than unkempt.

How To Get the 5-day beard

• Best for those who are blessed with even facial hair growth, the key to achieving this style is to let it grow and fill out (might be longer or shorter than five days depending on the growth rate of your beard) before trimming hair down to the shortest whiskers.
• As with short stubble, you need to take care of your skin, so using an exfoliator and moisturiser is crucial.

THE BEARDSTACHE

Can’t decide between a beard and a moustache? Then the beardstache is for you. Falling somewhere between stubble and a full beard paired with a moustache, this hybrid style offers a best-of-both-worlds solution and is the perfect lightweight alternative to a full beard come summer.

How To maintain the beardstache

• This style requires a fair share of maintenance. In order to achieve that perfect beard-to-moustache balance it’s best to trim down your cheeks, chin and sideburns to a heavy-stubble of roughly four to five millimetres in length while letting your moustache grow longer and bushier.
• A beard oil or wax will hydrate the hairs and help keep your style in top shape.

THE BOXED BEARD

A dialled-down, neater and office-friendly choice, the boxed beard is perfect for those who want just a hint of a classic style but struggle with lots of facial hair. Closely cropped, sculpted and groomed, the boxed beard is suitable for almost every face shape and can also be tailored to emphasise your best features.

How To grow a boxed beard

• This style requires some patience. You need eight to 12 weeks of untouched growth, as this will ensure balance and density.
• Once you’ve reached your desired length comb your beard in the direction it grows and then start ‘shaping’ your hair with trimming scissors into the boxed style.
• Use a razor to do your neckline, clippers to define the tip of the beard across your cheek, and use a small beard trimmer to get the fine details of the box looking lined up and classy.
