6 ways men can avoid dry skin

A man's complexion requires a different kind of care in winter to combat the common symptoms of dry and flaky skin.
Is your skin sensitive to changes in the weather? Does it freak out when the winter chill sets in? Be gone red, itchy patches, goodbye flaky face, so long tight and dry skin. These clever guidelines will ensure your skin keeps its cool (and its moisture) this winter.

1. KEEP SHOWER TIME SHORT

You might value a luxuriously long and hot shower, but your skin doesn’t. Dry skin is easily irritated by hot water, and over time prolonged showers at high temperatures can strip your skin of all its natural oils. Keep your showers short and lukewarm, and use a gentle body wash to help protect the outer layer of your skin.

2. CHOOSE A GENTLE FACE WASH

Select a cleanser or face wash that will help your skin retain as much moisture as possible. Soap-free, alcohol-free formulations are best, and if they’re packed with antioxidants – even better. Products containing vitamin E are a real treat for your skin.

3. LAYER YOUR HYDRATION

If your usual moisturiser is not giving your complexion what it needs this winter, give it a boost by applying a nourishing serum first. Serums have potent moisturising properties and because they are thinner in consistency, they are able to penetrate deeper into the skin.

4. USE A HYDRATING MASK

If your skin is in dire need of hydration but you can't bear using a rich and heavy moisturiser, then a weekly hydrating mask is key. After cleansing, apply a generous layer to your face and neck and leave it on for about 20 minutes. After rinsing, gently pat your skin dry to lock in the moisture.

5. ADD AN OIL

A face oil is an ideal way to incorporate further hydration into your routine. Packed with vitamins, natural ingredients and essential oils, facial oils tend to be more potent than your usual shaving or beard oil.

6. SPF IS A MUST

Heading outdoors? Don’t forget that the sun’s rays can still do major damage to your skin, even when you feel chilled to the bone. Applying sunscreen is an absolute must to protect your skin from the ageing and drying effects of the winter sun.
