Why faux fur is trending now more than ever

With major fashion houses stepping away from fur, we explore why faux fur is the way to go, and how to style it this winter.
With London Fashion Week becoming the first global fashion week to ban animal fur, it raised the question: Does real fur have a place in fashion?
Written by Candice Bresler

Well, if you listen to the likes of Gucci, Michael Kors, Tom Ford, John Galliano, Jimmy Choo, Versace and, most recently, Prada – the answer is a resounding ‘no’, with these powerhouses all having banned fur from their collections. And who are we to argue with fashion royalty?

But, if you’re still looking for your fix of cosy this winter, don’t despair – faux fur has quickly stepped up to the plate as the affordable and cruelty-free alternative. We tip our faux-fur cap in gratitude to the likes of Burberry and Givenchy for bringing the faux to their runways this past season – with Cara Delevingne closing the former’s show in a rainbow cape that would give Joseph a run for his money.

If faux is good enough for the legends of the runway, then you can bet your ethically-sourced, cruelty-free faux-fur beanie that it’s good enough for us. Let’s take the looks from fashion week to your winter closet with our pick of this season’s hottest faux fur.

The faux-fur jumper

When faux fur meets colour blocking and one of this season’s hottest colours – mustard – you know it’s love. Pair your faux-fur jumper with a bold sock boot and keep the rest of your outfit neutral, for a look as warm as it is hot.

Both colours allow you to dress your look up or down, whether you’re going for head-to-toe denim or a luxe look for a night out.
