It’s not just your home that requires a spring clean. We provide tips and tricks on how to spring-clean your beauty routine.
As we bid adieu to fluffy knits, scarves and indoor heating, it’s time to start the much anticipated spring clean – and that includes your beauty routine. ClichĂ©, we know; but there is nothing better than refreshing your beauty game. From cleaning your coveted beauty tools to adding new items, keep scrolling for tips on how to prep your routine for sunnier days.
1. BRIGHTEN UP YOUR BEAUTY PALETTE
After a long winter of moody colours, neutral nail polish and dark lipstick shades, now is the time to give your make-up a summer shake-up. Turn to bright, happy shades for a major change; think vibrant coral lips and lids, hot fuchsia manicures and flashes of bright blue on your lids.
2. EDIT YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS
Just as we change our wardrobe to suit the change of season, we should do the same to our skincare. We should be swopping out our heavy cream cleansers, oils and rich moisturisers with lightweight options that provide the same skin-soothing ingredients, without adding extra oil and grease.
3. THROW OUT WHAT YOU DON'T USE
One of the hardest things to do, especially if your beauty stash is a prized possession, is to throw out what you seldom use. Remember, beauty items do carry an expiration date, which could result in breakouts and bacterial infections with continued use. Mascara should be tossed after three months; liquid liner and concealer after six months; and lipstick, lip gloss and foundation after one year. When it comes to skincare, it depends on the product and the packaging; usually the packaging will indicate the product’s longevity once opened. But telltale signs of expiry is a change in colour, texture and/or odour. And if you’re unsure, rather throw it out!
4. GIVE YOUR BEAUTY TOOLS SOME TLC
We take great care to clean our skin and hair, but the cleanliness of the tools used to apply product to our face, hair and body are equally important too, especially as these tend to collect so much bacteria from daily use. Although brushes should be cleaned once a week, this is often not the case; and a change of season should be the perfect motivator to give them a deep clean and ensure they are germ-free.
5. GIVE YOUR SKIN A LIGHT SCRUB
To get your skin spring ready, a good exfoliating treatment is essential. Apart from getting rid of the dry, dead skin left over from the harsh winter months, gentle exfoliation once or twice a week will also assist with product penetration and unblocking pores, which amplifies the efficacy of the rest of your products.
6. USE LIGHTER COVERAGE
Lay off the heavy foundation as part of your spring-clean. Not only will a full-coverage foundation feel uncomfortable as the weather start to heat up, it could also lead to clogged pores and acne flare-ups due to increased sweating. Tinted moisturisers or feather-light hydrating options are your best bet, as they offer just enough coverage while still allowing your skin to breathe and your natural complexion to peek through.
7. PUMP UP YOUR SUN PROTECTION
While using SPF throughout the year is non-negotiable, it's wise to amp up your protection to more than SPF 30 in the summer. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF, which protects against UVA and UVB rays (UVA rays are the ones that can cause visible signs of ageing, while UVB rays are the ones that can burn). Opt for skincare and make-up with added SPF protection to boost your daily SPF to even higher levels.
