Summer time means shorts time. We narrow down the list to five of the most essential styles and cuts for every stylish man. Here’s to wearing shorts all summer long!
Practical, comfy and versatile, shorts work for just about every occasion. Whether denim, chino or cargo, a good pair of shorts is a summer staple. Here are the five styles that should be on rotation this summer.

1. Swim shorts
With so many styles to choose from, it's difficult to know which shorts to take with you on your next visit to the beach. Be practical when picking the right pair; choose a fabric that dries fast and won’t weigh you down the moment it gets wet. But also keep it playful. Go for bold colours and fun prints for an instant summer holiday feeling.

2. Active shorts
Whether you’re an avid runner or just enjoy the occasional weekend hike, a pair of active shorts is always good to have in your cupboard. When shopping for this style of shorts, you want to think function first – you’re looking for comfortable fabric that is breathable, lightweight and dries easily. Wear them for your next gym session or throw on a button-up shirt and a cool pair of trainers for an off-duty athleisure look.

3. Cargo shorts
Today’s cargo pants are a bit different from their '90s predecessors. The newer, updated version is slimmer and shorter, with better proportioned pockets. While this style of short lends itself to a more casual look, you can smarten it up with a few simple styling tricks – swop the tee with a collared shirt and ditch the sandals for a pair of boat shoes.
4. Denim shorts
Denim shorts are essential to every man’s wardrobe. They’re versatile enough to dress them up or down but, generally speaking, the darker the denim the more formal the look. Finding the right fit is key; usually one to two centimetres above the knee is considered ideal, and always grazing the bottom of the thigh. Make sure there’s room for movement but stay clear of anything overly (and not purposefully) baggy.

5. Chino shorts
The humble chino is arguably the most important pair of shorts a man can own due to its amazing versatility. Nowadays the chino short comes in prints and a variety of colours, but don’t discount the classic neutrals of tan and beige. Printed fabrics help to distract from skinnier legs and are the perfect choice to wear to a summer braai. Darker colours are ideal for night-time, while pastels are a stylish choice for pool parties.
