New modernism is on trend for interiors. Here’s how to work the look in your home for maximum appeal.
Born out of a rebellion against minimalism, the post-modern design movement is being refreshed and reapplied with the arrival of new modernism. Celebrating the abstract nature of traditional modernism, it incorporates more punchy, approachable themes and designs.

HOW TO MASTER NEW MODERNISM
Urban-inspired grids, carefree, haphazard painterly effects and texture-mimicking composite materials, such as terrazzo, are some of the elements at the forefront of this decor trend, while Mondrian-esque colours – combined with some new takes on these primary colours – take centre stage. The trick to nailing this trend is to decide on a simple palette and stick to it. Ground your space with black, grey and white, and use bold colours only in areas that need contrast against harder graphics, such as grid and check print.
1. START IN THE LIVING ROOM
In the lounge, new modernism is best expressed through straight-edged, angular lounge furniture, with very few curves. To soften the look, consider opting for couches and armchairs in eye-catching colours such as teal, fire-engine red, tangerine and mustard. Although bold, these colours are also inviting and warm, which contrasts really well against the severity of a black-and-white theme.
2. BE BOLD WITH COLOUR
In terms of paint, a feature wall in an unexpected colour is a relatively easy way to make a conservative-looking room look less anaemic. The key here is to let the scale of the room dictate how much colour you use. If you’re not a fan of large-scale colour or bold prints, stick to a majority monochrome scheme peppered with texture-centred cushions and throws in rust, grey melange, charcoal and ecru. You could use bold colours as smaller accents throughout the home, in the form of colour-block cushions, towels and napkins.
3. USE THE POWER OF PATTERN
Pattern is the great unifier. In a room that features bold colours, you can use it to bring the design together by choosing a pattern that features your shades in a cohesive application. If you’re not sure which bold colours will complement each other, deciding on a unifying pattern is a good place to start. In keeping with the trend, crockery and vases are taking on both perfectly straight geometric patterns and hand-painted lines. If you prefer to embrace modernism in less obvious ways, the devil is all in the detail, so even a couple of earth-toned mid-century modern vases with intricate patterns and engravings are enough to serve as a nod to the trend.
