1. THE SIDETABLE
Today, sidetables are available in a plethora of shapes, sizes and designs. To get even more use out of yours, look for one that is small, compact and easily movable – bonus points if it has more than one level to it. This way you’ll have more than enough room to display those beautiful bottles of gin, bowls of botanicals and sparkling crystal decanters for when you have guests coming over and want to take things up a notch. Et voila! An instant bar cart.
2. THE OTTOMAN
Ottomans are one of those pieces of furniture that are purchased very enthusiastically at first, but after a couple of years end up sad and neglected in a corner. One way to ensure you get full use out of your ottoman is to opt for one that is more structured, with a flat top as opposed to one that is tufted or has deep-button detail. This will ensure it can double as a table the next time you need a place to set down a tray of treats. Just add a pretty bouquet of flowers and you’re all set for teatime. Another great option when it comes to ottomans is a chest – storage, seat and table all in one!
3. THE POUFFE
Pouffes may seem to serve an aesthetic purpose only. But in 19th-century France, the pouffe was intended as a foot stool so you could prop your legs up comfortably while seated. We think it’s time to revert to the old way and make proper use out of these ornate cushioned seats. Whether it’s rustic Moroccan-style leather or sophisticated fabric, make sure that your pouffe is high enough and in proportion to your couch or armchair. Of course they do double as additional seating that's particularly useful in small spaces.
